5,000 Mile Intervals

Why Would I Service My Motorcycle Every 5,000 Miles?

Although the 1,000 mile service is likely the most important service you will do on your motorcycle, servicing at 5,000 mile intervals will help keep your overall repair costs down and help protect your investment. And it doesn't hurt to change you're engine oil every 2,500 miles. If you have a Priority Customer Maintenance Plan. All of these services are covered.

Isn't a Service Just an Oil Change?

No, these services include important adjustments, lubrication of cables & pivot points and a thorough inspection of the chassis, power train, and electrical systems of the motorcycle. Service check lists can be found on harley-davidson®.com or you can ask at the service counter. A list of services performed are always available to the customer upon delivery.

Wouldn't It Be Cheaper to Go to the Local Aftermarket Shop?

Yes, it would be cheaper initially. Keep in mind the key word here is "cheap". The old saying of "You get what you pay for" comes to mind. Proper servicing requires the correct tools, training, knowledge and skill. Dealerships offer endless resources and are a wealth of useful knowledge that you just won't get at an aftermarket dealer. This comes from years of experience and owning my own aftermarket shop years ago. So when you are dropping your bike off for service, ask some questions to test the knowledge of the person writing the repair order. The knowledge of this person can be a good indicator of the knowledge and skill level of the shop. Ask to see a list of the tasks performed for the service you are asking about. Finally, ask to see the service manual for the motorcycle you are having serviced. If the manual cannot be produced or if it is not the correct model & year for your particular motorcycle, I would strongly reconsider leaving your motorcycle with them.

When Can I Make an Appointment?

Service department hours right now are: Tuesday thru Saturday 9am to 6pm. Sunday drop off and pick up are also available when pre-arranged.

Brake Fluid Flush

Why Would I Do a Brake Fluid Flush?

As of 2005, Harley-Davidson® has been using DOT 4 brake fluid in brake systems on their Big Twin motorcycles and Sportster motorcycles as of 2007. DOT 4 fluid can absorb moisture which can cause brake system issues.

When Should I Do a Brake Fluid Service?

The recommended service interval is every 2 years or when the moisture level exceeds 3%. Typically about every 10,000 miles is when we see 3% or higher. The dealership has test equipment that can test for moisture in the fluid and this is done every 5,000 mile interval.

What Issue Can Result From Contaminated Fluid?

Poor braking performance is the most common symptom. A soft feel in the lever or pedal is also very common. When moisture in the system heats it will expand which can cause a dragging of the brake pads and will overheat the pads and rotor. Keep in mind that neither one of those brake related items are covered by your warranty if they do go bad.

How Much Does It Cost?

The brake fluid service consists of flushing the front and rear brake system with fresh brake fluid, inspecting brake pads and rotors, and checking for system leaks. The parts and labor charge is $90.00. Small price to pay to know you have well working reliable brakes.
